The Sherlock star could join Doctor Who for the show's 50th anniversary next year.
Along with the Daleks, there is one Doctor Who villain who has time and time again returned to face off against the Time Lord in a battle for supremacy – The Master.
Last played by John Simm during David Tennant’s turn as the Doctor, The Master has been a constant quandary for the Doctor, who has swayed continuously from wanting to help him to needing to defeat him.
Now, if the latest rumours are to be believed, The Master could be about to return for the 50th Anniversary of the show in 2013, and who could deny that it would be something of the perfect showdown.
The question then is, who would play the new incarnation of the arch-villain? Well, it seems that Steven Moffat could be about to try and pull of a coup and enlist his Sherlock lead Benedict Cumberbatch to the role if shooting schedules will allow.
After John Simm’s maniacal version of The Master was seen entering the time vortex at the end of David Tennant’s final episode, Cumberbatch would possibly be the perfect candidate to resurrect The Master, with his suave attitude bringing a new deadly charm to the character.
It is obviously still some time away, but as a good bit of gossip, it’s certainly one to watch.
